Rehabilitative Prison Design

We are honored to have been part of this groundbreaking Innovate UK-funded design strategy and research initiative for rehabilitative prison environments. Our work has been awarded the 2018 RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) President’s Medal for Research in the Ethics and Sustainable Development category.

Building upon the RSA’s (Royal Society for the Arts) Future Prison project, we worked with Matter Architecture and policy expert Rachel O’Brien to research the environmental psychology of prisons, and advise the Ministry of Justice on simple steps to design more rehabilitative spaces. After conducting a Space Audit of HMP Berwyn, Britain’s newest prison, we launched an evidence-based design guide in December 2017.

You can read the full report on Wellbeing in Prison Design here, which has also been covered in Architecture Today and the Architect’s Journal. We are currently exploring partnerships to expand this project to the United States.
